Open cystoplasty is a procedure in which an abnormal bladder is replaced or enlarged using tissue from the stomach or bowel. The surgery is indicated when the bladder is not big enough, or is too stiff and cannot completely expand to hold the normal amount of urine produced by the kidneys. Cystoplasty is performed to treat urine leakage (incontinence) or reflux, where the urine backs up towards the kidneys. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

There are two types of cystoplasty:

  • Clam cystoplasty: Your bladder wall is cut almost completely to form two halves that resemble clam shells. A patch of tissue is excised from the intestine (along with the blood vessels) and sutured to the bladder.
  • Substitution cystoplasty: Your bladder is removed leaving only the neck of the bladder surrounded by sphincter muscles, which controls the flow of urine. A part of the bowel is removed and used to prepare a cup, which is attached to the bladder neck.

Like all surgeries, cystoplasty may be associated with certain complications such as urinary infection, mucus formation, urinary incontinence or inability to empty the new bladder completely.

There are alternate minimally invasive/laparoscopic procedures that can be availed of. The open cystoplasty are restricted to selected cases only. Your surgeon will discuss your options with you based on your particular medical history.
