Female Incontinence Procedures: TVT and TOT Minimally Invasive

Two muscles control the release of urine from the urinary bladder. Weakness in these muscles cause stress urinary incontinence, where slight pressure on the abdomen while coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising can lead to the leakage of urine involuntarily. Urinary incontinence can be treated by a minimally invasive surgery with Tension Free Vaginal Tape(TVT) and Trans-Obturator Tape (TOT or TVT-O).

During the TVT surgery, your doctor makes two incisions on either side of your abdomen and one in your vagina. During TVT-O surgery, your doctor makes small incisions in the thigh folds and one in your vagina. Following this, a ribbon-like sling made of synthetic mesh is inserted through the vagina. The sling is placed under the urethra like a hammock to hold it in its proper position. This helps the urethra to remain closed and prevent the involuntary leakage of urine.

The advantages of TVT and TOT include:

  • Simple surgical procedures that take about 30 minutes
  • Fast recovery rate
  • Minimal post-surgical pain
  • Resume normal activities in a few days
  • Surgery can be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia

Your surgeon will discuss your options with you based on your particular medical history.
