Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy with extended lymph node dissection is a minimally invasive technique indicated for the treatment of prostate cancer that involves removal of the prostate gland along with some of the tissue around it including the seminal vesicles and lymph nodes. It is performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon makes 3 to 4 small incisions on the abdomen. A laparoscope (narrow tube with a light and a tiny camera) is inserted into one of the incisions. The camera is connected to a high definition monitor to guide your surgeon throughout the procedure. Surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions to access the prostate. The prostate is excised along with the lymph nodes. The incisions are closed with sutures.

As with all surgical procedures, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy may be associated with certain complications, which include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Injury to the surrounding tissues and organs
  • Blood clot in the leg or lungs
  • Stroke or heart attack
  • Change in the length of the penis
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Impotency

The advantages of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy when compared to open radical prostatectomy include:

  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced hospital stay
