A vesicovaginal fistula or VVF is an abnormal connection between the genital tract (vagina, cervix, neck of the womb), and the urinary tract (bladder) and womb. Open vesicovaginal fistula repair is a surgical procedure performed to repair the abnormal fistula.
VVF repair is performed under general anesthesia. Your doctor makes an incision in the lower abdomen to reach the fistula and removes the lining of the fistula. The abnormal connection is repaired so that there is no connection between the genital and urinary tracts. Your doctor then repairs the walls of the vagina and urinary tract, and closes the incision with the help of sutures. A catheter may be placed to aid in urination. The procedure takes about 3 hours and you will remain in the hospital for about 5 days based on the complexity of your surgery. As in all other procedures, open vesicovaginal repair may also have complications such as urinary tract infection, injury to the genital tract and irritation of the vulva
This procedure can also be performed through your natural vaginal opening. Minimally invasive/laparoscopic fistula repair can be availed of, but are restricted to selected cases only. Your surgeon will discuss your options with you based on your particular medical history.
