Phalloplasty is a surgery performed to increase the size of the penis. It consists of two procedures – lengthening of the penis and increasing the girth of the penis. Penile lengthening involves increasing the flaccid (non-erect) length of the penis by cutting the ligaments that firmly secure the penis to the pubic bone.
Penile lengthening is performed under general anesthesia. Your doctor makes an incision in the pubic area (at the base of the penis) and releases the suspensory ligament. This accounts for an increase in length of about 1 or 2 inches of the penis. Your doctor then sutures the ligament at a lower position and covers the new extension of your penis with a flap of skin taken from the pubic bone area. The incision is closed with sutures. This procedure does not alter the length of the erect penis, but may slightly lower the angle when compared to before the surgery.
Like all surgeries, penile lengthening may involve complications such as bleeding, infection, nerve damage, collection of fluid underneath the skin, and adverse reactions to anesthesia.
