Reconstruction of Urethral Stricture End-to-End Urethroplasty

Urethroplasty is a surgery which involves the reconstruction of the urethra to treat urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra). This procedure is suggested for strictures less than 2 cm in length. The procedure is performed under spinal or general anesthesia and involves the removal of the diseased segment. Your doctor makes an incision in the penis, scrotum or perineum to expose the stricture. The diseased segment of urethra is cut and removed. The two free ends are cut so as to create the largest possible lumen or opening. Your surgeon then brings the two ends together, overlaps them by 2 cm and sutures them together. A urethral catheter is placed to aid in urination and wound healing. The incision is then closed with sutures. Like all surgeries, end-to-end urethroplasty may be associated with certain complications such as erectile dysfunction and curving or shortening of the penis.

There are alternate minimally invasive/laparoscopic procedures that can be availed of. The open end-to-end urethroplasty is restricted to selected cases only. Your surgeon will discuss your options with you based on your particular medical history.
