Total amputation of the penis, also called penectomy, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the whole penis, to treat large penile cancers. Total amputation is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. Your whole penis is removed along with the parts that extend into the pelvic region. Your doctor makes a new opening for the passage of urine between your scrotum (sac holding the testicles) and anus. In some cases, a catheter (thin tube) is placed permanently in the bladder to help in urination.
As in all surgeries, total amputation of the penis also includes certain risks such as heavy blood loss and infections, swelling or bruising of the scrotum, and recurrence of the tumour.
